Why a spiral beats a bottle of chemical

A bathroom blockage is hair, bound with soap. Caustic cleaner softens some of it, leaves the rest, and if it fails you are left with a pipe full of chemical to work in.

A spiral catches the hair and pulls it out. It is unpleasant to look at and it is finished in ten minutes.

The five metres

Enough to go through a basin waste, round the trap and well into the branch pipe behind the wall — which is where a blockage sits when plunging has already failed.

What to check yourself

Cable diameter and minimum pipe size are not published. One auger in this hub states it needs at least 15 mm of clearance to enter; the same order of size applies here.

And the maintenance nobody does
