The best bath mats for 2026

A bath mat has to do two things that pull against each other: absorb a lot of water and then dry out before the next shower. Cotton with a heavy pile — makers quote grams per square metre, and 1000 g/m² and up is the dense end — absorbs the most and dries the slowest, which is why a thick mat in a windowless bathroom stays damp and starts to smell. Microfibre dries faster and holds less. Diatomaceous earth boards work differently again: they are a hard stone-like slab that wicks water and dries in minutes, they never go in a washing machine, and they crack if dropped. The other half of the review is the backing: latex or TPR grips a hard floor and eventually perishes, while an unbacked cotton mat slides unless it sits on something. Check the washing temperature and whether tumble drying is allowed, because a latex backing usually is not. We compare dimensions, material and pile weight, backing type, drying behaviour, washing temperature, and whether tumble drying is allowed.
