Almost every complaint about a toilet seat is a measuring problem. American toilets come in two shapes: round, about 16.5 inches from the center of the seat bolts to the front edge of the bowl, and elongated, about 18.5 inches. A third, compact elongated, sits between and is common in small bathrooms. The bolt holes themselves are standard at 5-1/2 inches apart.
