The best soft-close toilet seats for 2026

Almost every complaint about a toilet seat is a measuring problem, and there are exactly three measurements. Hinge hole spacing — the distance between the centres of the two holes in the pan — is close to universal at around 155 mm on European ceramics, but not guaranteed, and it is the first to check. Length, from the hinge holes to the front of the pan, varies from about 40 to 48 cm and is the one that makes a seat look wrong. Width at the widest point completes it. After the fit, the material: duroplast is dense, heavy and takes a hard knock; thermoplastic is lighter, warmer to sit on and cheaper. Soft-close is a damper in the hinge, and it is a wear part — the seats worth buying are the ones where the hinge is sold separately. Quick-release, which lets the seat lift off for cleaning, is the feature people miss most once they have had it. We compare length, width, hinge hole spacing, material, hinge type and fixing, quick-release, and stated load capacity.

A duroplast seat with soft-close on both the lid AND the ring, a quick-release button and a paper template — for twenty-one euros.

  3. BENKSTEIN oval urea-duroplast seat, stainless hinges, DIN 19516 150 kg

Toilet seat · urea duroplast, antibacterial and colourfast · stainless steel hinges · top fixing · quick-release · 150 kg to DIN 19516

A seat that names its hinge metal — stainless steel — and cites the standard behind its load figure, which two thirds of this shelf does not.

Best for: A seat that will be unbolted again one day — the hinges are the part that decides whether that is possible.
