The drain base and the waterproofing decide it, not the grate
A linear drain is chosen on its length, its outlet and what it sits on. Length is a design choice — 24 inches for most showers, 48 inches to run wall to wall in a large walk-in. The outlet on American drains is 2 inches, and the channel sits on a drain base, usually sold separately in PVC or ABS, that ties it to the waste pipe and to the shower's waterproofing membrane. Some drains state which membranes they are not compatible with, and that line is worth more than the finish. The stated drainage rate, usually in liters per minute, has to exceed what your shower heads deliver, and on these drains it does by a wide margin. The trap itself sits below the floor, where US codes require a 2-inch seal. We compare length, outlet, drainage rate, grate type, steel and certification.
