That is what it does, and this site does not claim anything beyond it: a softener is not a health product, and it does not make water safer to drink — treated water carries more sodium, not less, and drinking water quality is a matter for your supplier and your national rules. What to compare is engineering. Resin volume in litres sets the capacity, usually published as cubic-metre-degrees — the volume of water at a given hardness one filling can treat. To use it you need your own water hardness, which your supplier publishes. Regeneration type divides the market: time-clock units regenerate on a schedule whether or not you used water, metered units count litres and cost less in salt.
