Schildmeyer mirror cabinet 70 × 16 × 75 cm, six adjustable glass shelves review

The only mirror cabinet in this catalogue with six adjustable glass shelves and metal fittings — the two things that decide whether a cabinet is still square in ten years.

The bottom line The cabinet built to last, with the shelving and the hinges to prove it. Its body is chipboard, and its electrical rating is unpublished like everyone else's.

What you are getting

A white mirror cabinet in melamine-coated chipboard, 70 cm wide, 75 cm high and 16 cm deep, with three doors, six height-adjustable glass shelves, metal fittings, a switch-and-socket combination and a supplied LED surface light. Made in Germany.

Six adjustable glass shelves

The most storage in this hub, and — more usefully — the most adjustable storage. Bathroom bottles are all different heights, and a cabinet with fixed shelves wastes a third of its volume in air above short things.

Glass, not board: it will not sag under a row of bottles and it will not swell where something drips.

Metal fittings, on three doors

Three doors means three sets of hinges holding mirror glass. That is where a cabinet fails visibly: the hinges sag, the doors stop lining up, and the cabinet looks tired years before it stops working.

Naming metal is the most durable thing on this specification.

The material caveat

The body is melamine-coated chipboard. It is the standard for bathroom furniture and it is the one material in this room with a hard failure mode: water at a cut edge, and the board swells permanently.

The plastic cabinet in this hub does not have that problem. It also has fixed shelves and plastic fittings.

The electrical gap

A switch-and-socket combination and no published IP rating. Sockets in bathrooms are governed by national zone rules. That is a question for an electrician, and no cabinet in this hub answers it.

What we like, and what we don't

Strengths

  • Six glass shelves, all height-adjustable — the most storage and the most flexibility in this hub
  • Metal fittings rather than plastic, which is what keeps three doors hanging straight over the years
  • Publishes all three dimensions, including a 16 cm depth, and is stated as Made in Germany

Compromises

  • A melamine-coated chipboard body, which is the material that swells if water gets to a cut edge
  • No IP rating, on a cabinet with a socket in a bathroom
  • The dearest cabinet in this hub by a clear margin

Questions people actually ask

Why do glass shelves matter?

They do not sag, they do not absorb water, and they let the light from above reach the lower compartments. A chipboard shelf loaded with bottles bows over the years, and one that has been dripped on swells at the edge.

Do metal fittings really make a difference?

On a three-door cabinet, yes. Three doors is three pairs of hinges carrying mirror glass, and plastic hinges sag until the doors no longer line up. It is the commonest way a mirror cabinet stops looking good long before it stops working.
