Fitting out a powder room

A powder room is the smallest room with plumbing in a house, and the one guests use. That makes three things matter more than usual: how far the sink projects into a narrow room, what the plumbing under a wall-mount sink looks like, and a drain that does not smell after a week of disuse. Every part here was sold on Amazon.com on October 29, 2026.

Five parts, chosen for a narrow room, a visible trap and a sink that sits unused for days. Prices are Amazon.com, read on October 29, 2026.

The sink: shallow, with an overflow

The CHIKESI wall-mount sink is 14.37 inches wide with a bowl nearly the full width of the sink, published inside dimensions, a built-in overflow and a stated drain size, at about $50. The DeerValley compact, 15 by 10 inches, comes with complete mounting hardware and was the cheapest ceramic sink per inch on this site, at about $50.

The faucet: one hole, one lever

On a small wall-mount sink, a single-hole faucet keeps the deck clear. The Pfister Vaneri is a one-lever, 1.2 gpm WaterSense faucet with a Push & Seal drain in the box and a limited lifetime warranty, at about $90. Check that your sink is drilled for one hole first.

The trap people will see

Under a wall-mount sink there is no cabinet to hide a white plastic P-trap. The chrome 1-1/4 inch bottle trap is made to be seen, at about $22. A bottle trap holds its seal in a compact body; in a room used rarely, run the faucet weekly so it does not dry out.

The mirror

A powder room mirror is lit by the room’s single light, often badly. The DUMOS 24 × 32 inch LED mirror adds its own light with three color temperatures and dimming, at about $57. Check how it takes power before hanging it: the listing does not say whether it plugs in or is hard-wired.

What not to bother with here

A large vanity, a tall faucet, or a rain-style anything. A powder room is a hand sink and a mirror; spend on the depth and the trap, not the size.

The questions we get

Why does a powder room smell when nothing leaks?

The trap's water seal evaporates when the sink is not used. US plumbing codes require a seal of 2 to 4 inches, and in a room used once a week a shallow seal can dry out. Run the faucet for a few seconds every week, and pour water down any floor drain too.

Wall-mount sink or small vanity?

A wall-mount sink leaves the floor clear and projects less, which is what a narrow room needs; a vanity hides the plumbing and adds storage. With a wall-mount sink, the trap is on show, which is why a chrome bottle trap is on this list.

Do I need an overflow?

On a sink with a stopper, an overflow stops a running faucet from flooding the floor. Of the wall-mount sinks on this site, the CHIKESI and the PROFLO have one; a sink without one needs a drain without overflow slots.

Can a powder room sink be very small?

Yes, for hands. Around 14 to 15 inches wide works for washing hands without splashing; smaller sinks, such as the shawoo models on this site, are hand sinks in the strict sense.

Each fitting, and the bathroom it belongs in

CHIKESI Wall Mount Bathroom Sink · $50

Right for: The default choice on this shelf: a fifty-dollar ceramic sink with an overflow, and the one that tells you most

Its best quality: Publishes its interior bowl dimensions as well as its exterior, which three of the seven sinks here do not — and the bowl is nearly the full width

Its main catch: Does not publish its faucet hole size, where DeerValley publishes 1 3/8 in

DeerValley DV-1WS0593 · $50

Right for: A buyer who wants to order the sink, the faucet and the drain in one go and have all three fit

Its best quality: Publishes both the faucet hole and the drain opening — 1 3/8 in and 1 3/4 in — which no other sink on this shelf does

Its main catch: No overflow published, so a drain must be chosen on the assumption there is none — and that cannot be undone

Pfister LF042VRIBB · $90

Right for: A single-hole or 4-inch sink where a tool-free drain and a written lifetime warranty matter more than spout figures

Its best quality: 1.2 gpm with WaterSense certification and an NSF lead-free statement naming the state laws it meets

Its main catch: No spout reach or spout height published as such, only the overall box of the faucet

ecoartheating Chrome 1-1/4 in Bottle Trap · $22

Right for: A vessel or pedestal sink where the trap is visible, and the pipework is close to lining up

Its best quality: The only trap on this shelf that claims to meet US and Canadian plumbing code — which on a trap is a health claim, not a formality

Its main catch: A bottle trap holds a smaller water seal than a P-trap and is treated differently by different codes, which is why the compliance claim needs checking against your own

DUMOS DU2432ZJLED · $57

Right for: A narrow wall where 24 inches is the limit — and only if the bigger DUMOS mirrors will not fit

Its best quality: A memory function that restores both brightness and color temperature, on the cheapest mirror on this shelf

Its main catch: Ten dollars sixty a square foot — the most expensive glass of the three DUMOS mirrors here, where the 36 x 48 is $7.29

What this ranking rests on

The fittings listed come from this catalog of this site. Specifications are the published ones, from the maker and from the Amazon page; prices are what Keepa reported on the date below, and both move over time. The order uses declared specifications, the balance between stated strengths and stated limits, and price. No fitting here has been installed or tried by us, and the page does not claim it was.
