Choosing a bathroom faucet, by what the money actually buys

Bathroom faucets are the family where price and result are most weakly related, because so much of what is sold is a finish over a similar mechanism. This list runs up the shelf, from about $76 to $119 on Amazon.com on October 29, 2026, and each step says what the extra money buys rather than what it looks like.

Five faucets, cheapest first, with what each step adds.

About $76: two handles on a 4-inch sink

The Kohler Willamette is a 4-inch centerset with two lever handles, two ceramic disk valves and 1.5 gpm. It publishes every fit dimension a plumber asks for — 5.32 inches of reach, 5.22 of height, a 1.625-inch maximum deck — and puts the drain and its tailpiece in the box. What it does not state is a warranty on the Amazon.com page.

About $90: one lever, one hole, and the paperwork

The Pfister Vaneri moves to a single lever and 1.2 gpm WaterSense, with a 3-hole deckplate, a tool-free Push & Seal drain and a limited lifetime warranty. Its page names the state lead-free laws it meets. It does not publish spout reach or height.

About $98: one lever on a 3-hole sink

The Moen Chateau L4625 puts a single lever on a centerset body: one-hand mixing without new drilling, 1.2 gpm, ADA compliant, a lifetime warranty. Its reach, 4.36 inches, is the shortest here, and its listing says it cannot ship to California or Vermont.

About $105: reach, and one hole or three

The Moen 6145 installs through one hole, or three with its escutcheon, and publishes 5.5 inches of reach, the longest on this list. No drain is listed.

About $119: the 8-inch widespread sink

The Pfister Courant is the only widespread faucet here: three separate parts for an 8-inch spread, a 360° swivel spout, NSF lead-free, a Push & Seal drain and a lifetime warranty. Its spec table gives spout figures that contradict its overall height.

What the money does not buy

A better flow: all five sit between 1.2 and 1.5 gpm. A better finish life, beyond what the warranty covers. Above about $90, what changes is the hole pattern you can fit and the paperwork behind the faucet.

The questions we get

What decides which faucet fits?

The holes in your sink. Count them and measure the outer two, center to center: one hole takes a single-hole faucet, three holes 4 inches apart take a centerset faucet or a single-hole one with a deckplate, three holes 8 inches apart take a widespread faucet. The standard American faucet hole is 1-3/8 inches.

Is a more expensive faucet more reliable?

Only where the money went into the valve and the body. A ceramic disc cartridge sold under a model number is a part you can still buy in ten years, and a lifetime warranty from a major maker is what makes that matter.

What does WaterSense mean?

An EPA label for bathroom faucets that use 1.5 gpm or less, against the 2.2 gpm federal ceiling. Three of the five faucets here are 1.2 gpm WaterSense models.

Do I need a new drain?

Often, and it is easy to forget. The Kohler Willamette and both Pfisters include one; the two Moens list the faucet only.

Does the finish affect durability?

Chrome, brushed nickel and matte black are all finishes over the body metal. What differs is how they show limescale and what may be used to clean them; most makers forbid abrasive and acidic cleaners on colored finishes.
