The 1/2-inch arm fits everything, so judge the spray, the hose and the flow
The best hand showers for 2026
The handheld is the cheapest part of a shower to change and the one that changes it most. American shower arms are 1/2-inch NPT, and handhelds connect to them through a bracket or a diverter, so fitting is rarely the question; the comparison is about behavior. Spray modes are the headline, and the count is inflated: a head advertising eight modes usually has three you will use. What matters more is the flow rate: 2.5 gpm is the federal maximum, and California, Colorado, New York, Washington and several other states limit shower heads sold there to 1.8 or 2.0 gpm. Then the details you live with: hose length, whether there is a pause setting, nozzles you can rub clean, and how the head docks. We compare spray modes, face size, flow rate, weight, cleanable nozzles and hose.
