Duroplast or thermoplastic: which toilet seat material?

Duroplast is dense, heavy and hard-wearing. Thermoplastic is lighter, warmer to sit on and cheaper. Both are ordinary choices, and the hinge matters more.

Duroplast is the heavy, hard, scratch-resistant option; thermoplastic is lighter, warmer and cheaper. Neither is a mistake, and the hinge outlives or outfails both.

Duroplast

A thermoset resin, dense and rigid. It resists scratching and household cleaners, it feels solid, and it is cold to sit on. Its weight is also what puts stress on a soft-close hinge over time.

Thermoplastic

Injection-moulded and lighter. It is warmer to the touch, more forgiving if something is dropped on it, and it scratches more easily. On a seat that will be replaced in five years anyway, that is a smaller drawback than it sounds.

Wood and MDF

Coated wood or MDF seats exist and feel different again. The coating is the whole product: once water gets past it at a fixing point, the board swells and the seat is finished.

The part that actually decides longevity

The hinge. Soft-close is a damper, it is a wear part, and the seats worth buying are the ones where the hinge is sold separately. A duroplast seat with an unobtainable hinge is a heavy seat you throw away.

Questions people actually ask

Which material takes more weight?

Duroplast, and manufacturers state a load figure for it. Both materials in ordinary use are well within their limits; the failure people actually see is the hinge, not the lid.

Do stainless steel hinges matter?

They matter where the fixing sits in a damp recess under the pan. Plated steel hinges corrode there and seize; stainless ones do not, and a seat that states them is telling you where its money went.
