What the maker puts in writing
- Eliminates hard water minerals for softer skin, shinier hair and less soap scum
- “UPGRADED 10% CROSSLINK RESIN FOR RELIABILITY: Enhanced resin formulation helps handle chlorinated municipal water, supporting stable softening performance over time. This upgrade provides better chlorine resistance versus standard 8% media”
- “10”x54” mineral tank with 1.5 cu ft 10% crosslink resin; 14” x 36” brine tank holding up to 250 lb of salt; Fleck 5600SXT valve; 1” NPT inlet/outlet; bypass and drain fittings included”
- Designed for typical residential pipe layouts, with installation instructions and product support
- USA-assembled, backed by over 35 years of water treatment experience
It tells you what is in the box
Read that third bullet again, because nothing else on this shelf comes close.
A Fleck 5600SXT valve. One and a half cubic feet of resin. Ten per cent crosslink. A 10 by 54 inch mineral tank. A 14 by 36 inch brine tank for 250 pounds of salt. One inch NPT.
Eleven other listings here say premium-grade resin and digital metered control head and leave it there.
Why the valve name is the most important word on the page
A water softener is two things: a plastic tank full of beads, and a valve that moves water through them.
The beads last fifteen or twenty years. The valve has a motor, a piston and seals, and it is what fails.
A Fleck 5600SXT is an industry standard. Service kits, pistons, seals and control boards are sold by dozens of suppliers; any plumber who does water treatment has worked on one; and that will still be true in 2041.
When an unnamed “digital metered control head” fails in year eight, there is exactly one source of parts, and only if that company still exists.
That is what $16.77 a thousand grains buys, and it is a real thing to buy.
And ten per cent, which is the other real number
Softener resin is polystyrene cross-linked with divinylbenzene, and standard resin uses about 8%.
Chlorine in municipal water attacks those cross-links. The beads swell, go soft, and lose capacity — which is why a softener on city water wears out faster than the same softener on a well.
Ten per cent crosslink slows that down, measurably, and AFWFilters is the only maker on this shelf that mentions crosslinking at all.
The only other listings that address chlorine are Aquasure’s 48,000 and 50,000 grain models, which put a carbon pre-filter in front of the resin instead. Both approaches are legitimate; eight listings here do neither.
Where the value argument breaks down
On capacity, this is not the buy: $804.99 for 48,000 grains is $16.77 a thousand, against $11.72 for Aquasure’s 64,000.
And no warranty is published. None. Aquasure gives five years, Aquasana 5/10, PRO+AQUA five, Kenmore and EcoPure ten on the tank.
For a machine whose whole argument is that you will still be running it in fifteen years, that omission is the odd thing about the page.
