What the maker puts in writing

  • An automatic digital metered control head with a fully programmable backlit display, allowing custom auto-flush intervals depending on incoming water quality and water usage
  • A high-strength, corrosion-resistant, fiberglass-lined polyethylene tank, a durable bypass valve and prefilled premium-grade resin; 30-day money-back, “5-year extended manufacturer warranty and life-time free US based tech support when you activate your product online within 60 days”

Five hundred and twenty-three dollars to start

Which is the lowest price on this shelf for a softener that actually meters.

That word matters. A timer-based softener regenerates every three days whether it needs to or not, and every regeneration spends salt and perhaps fifty gallons of water. A metered head counts the water that has passed through and regenerates when the resin is actually spent.

Over a decade that is the difference between a softener and a salt habit.

But look at Aquasure’s own ladder before buying this rung

32,000 grains — $523.29 — $16.35 per thousand 48,000 grains — $629.99 — $13.12 50,000 grains — $679.99 — $13.60 64,000 grains — $749.99 — $11.72

Twice the capacity for 43% more money.

And a larger softener does not merely last longer between regenerations; it uses less salt per grain removed, because each regeneration flushes a fixed quantity of brine through the resin bed.

What the small one is actually for

Two hundred and three millimeters square.

That is the narrowest two-tank system on this shelf — the 64,000-grain unit is 15 in (381 mm) — and at 52 in (1321 mm) it is also the shortest of the four Aquasures, where the 48,000-grain model stands 62 in (1575 mm) tall.

Thirty kilograms rather than sixty-eight.

If the space is a utility cabinet rather than a basement, that is the whole argument, and it is a good one.

The condition in the warranty

5-year extended manufacturer warranty… when you activate your product online within 60 days.

Five years is among the best cover on this shelf — Kenmore and EcoPure give one year of full cover, AFWFilters and GE publish none.

It is also conditional on something most buyers will forget. Register it the week it arrives.

And one thing that is not published

No NSF/ANSI 44 certification. That is the American standard for cation exchange water softeners, and it is published by two listings on this shelf — both Aquasanas. Aquasure publishes none on any of its five.

No flow rate either, which only PRO+AQUA gives on this shelf, and no resin volume, which only AFWFilters gives.

Strengths, and the catches

Strengths

  • Five hundred and twenty-three dollars for a genuine metered whole-house softener, which is the lowest price of entry on this shelf
  • Two hundred and three millimeters square: the narrowest footprint of any two-tank system here
  • Five years of warranty and lifetime US technical support, which is more than Kenmore, EcoPure, AFWFilters or GE publish

Compromises

  • Sixteen dollars thirty-five per thousand grains, against $11.72 for Aquasure’s own 64,000-grain unit
  • The five-year warranty requires activating the product online within 60 days — a condition easy to miss
  • No pre-filter, where the maker’s 48,000 and 50,000 grain models include a sediment, carbon and zinc filter

The questions we get

What does a grain rating actually mean?

It is how much hardness the resin can remove before it has to regenerate, not how hard your water can be. The arithmetic is straightforward: multiply your water hardness in grains per gallon by the gallons your household uses in a day, and you get the grains consumed per day. A family of three using 180 gallons a day on 15 grain-per-gallon water consumes 2,700 grains a day, so a 32,000-grain unit regenerates roughly every twelve days. A larger unit regenerates less often, uses less salt per grain removed, and lasts longer — which is why the bigger models on this shelf cost less per thousand grains.

Should I buy the bigger Aquasure instead?

The arithmetic says look hard at it. Aquasure sells 32,000 grains here for $523.29 and 64,000 grains for $749.99 — twice the capacity for 43% more money, which is $16.35 a thousand grains against $11.72. The reservations are physical: the 64,000-grain unit is 15 in (381 mm) square and 60 in (1524 mm) tall against 7.99 in (203 mm) and 52 in (1321 mm) here, and it weighs 149 lb (67.6 kg) against 30.4. If the space is a narrow utility cabinet, this is the one that fits.

What is the catch in the warranty?

The condition. Aquasure publishes "a 5-year extended manufacturer warranty and life-time free US based tech support when you activate your product online within 60 days" — on all five of its listings on this shelf. Five years is among the best cover here, and it is contingent on an action most buyers will not take. Register it the week it arrives.
