The certification
IAPMO to NSF/ANSI Standard 44.
That is the American national standard for cation exchange water softeners, and certification means an accredited body has tested the product for what it claims — hardness reduction at a stated capacity and salt dose, no contaminants contributed, materials and structure sound.
It is a different order of claim from removes 99% of hard minerals, which is what most of this shelf offers.
Of the twelve listings here, two publish a certification: this one and its 60,000-grain sibling. Ten publish nothing at all — including all five Aquasures, AFWFilters, Kenmore, GE, EcoPure and PRO+AQUA.
And CSA B483.1 as well, which is the Canadian drinking-water-treatment standard.
Fifty per cent and twenty-eight per cent
The other thing this page does that nothing else on this shelf does: it puts numbers on the running cost.
50% less salt and 28% less water on metered operation mode compared to standard time-based regenerated softeners.
Salt is what a softener consumes for its whole life. A time-based unit regenerates on a calendar, exhausted or not. A metered one regenerates on consumption.
Kenmore calls its version artificial intelligence. EcoPure calls its AutoSense AI. Aquasure says saving hundreds of gallons.
Four makers describing the same idea. One of them tells you what it is worth.
Forty-three inches, not sixty-two
43 in (1092 mm), in a cabinet — the resin tank inside the brine tank, one footprint.
Aquasure’s 48,000-grain tank is 62 in (1575 mm) and needs clearance above it for service.
That is the real architectural choice on this shelf. A cabinet fits under a stair or a low basement joist and is replaced whole. A two-tank system is taller, holds more salt, and lets you change the resin without changing the brine tank.
What it costs
Eighteen dollars seventy-three a thousand grains, against $11.72 for Aquasure’s 64,000.
That is the price of the certification and the published figures, and whether it is worth it depends on how much you value having both in writing.
And the awkward sentence
We recommend the optional pre-filter included with the Aquasana Softener Installation Kit sold separately.
Sediment and chlorine shorten resin life, Aquasana knows it, and the answer is another purchase.
Aquasure’s 48,000 and 50,000 grain models include a sediment, carbon and zinc pre-filter in the box. Add the kit to the sum before comparing prices.
