Fifty per cent more for forty per cent more
40,000 grains — $749 — $18.73 per thousand.
60,000 grains — $1,049 — $17.48 per thousand.
And the cabinet is exactly the same size: 30 × 16 × 43 in (762 x 406 x 1092 mm) for both.
So within Aquasana’s range this is the one to buy if the house warrants it — twenty thousand extra grains for three hundred dollars, and not a millimeter more floor.
The question the page does not answer
If the cabinet is identical, where does the extra resin go?
In a cabinet softener the resin tank sits inside the brine tank. More resin therefore means less room for salt, which means filling it more often.
Aquasana publishes neither the resin volume nor the salt capacity on either model. AFWFilters, on this shelf, publishes both — 1.5 cubic feet of resin and a brine tank for 250 pounds — and is the only maker here that does.
Worth asking before buying, because salt-fill frequency is something you live with.
What the money buys that cheaper softeners do not
IAPMO certification to NSF/ANSI Standard 44 — the American standard for cation exchange softeners, tested by an accredited body. Ten of the twelve listings on this shelf publish no certification whatever.
Fifty per cent less salt and twenty-eight per cent less water than a time-based softener, in figures. Four makers here describe the same metered-regeneration idea; this is the only one that quantifies it.
A 5/10-year limited warranty, against none at all from AFWFilters and GE.
And what it costs against the cheapest grains here
Aquasure sells 64,000 grains for $749.99 — four thousand more grains for $299 less.
Aquasure publishes no certification, no efficiency figure and no flow rate, and its five-year warranty is conditional on registering online within sixty days.
That is the trade, stated plainly: three hundred dollars against an audited certification and two numbers about what the thing costs to run.
Forty-three inches
43 in (1092 mm). Aquasure’s 48,000-grain tank is 62 in (1575 mm) and needs clearance above it to service the head.
A cabinet goes under a low joist and is replaced whole. A two-tank system is taller, holds more salt, and lets you change resin and brine tank separately.
That is the real architectural choice on this shelf, and it is worth making deliberately.
