J-FAMILY 14 × 10 in small vessel sink review

A 14.25 x 9.76 in rectangular vessel sink fired above 2336 °F (1280 °C), with a flat bottom and a 1.75 in drain.

What the maker puts in writing

  • “Measuring 14.25 x 9.76 x 4.41 inches (362 x 248 x 112 mm) small size, specially designed to save space for compact countertop in powder rooms, guest rooms, cloakrooms and RV bathroom”
  • “Its elongated, humanized design with rounded corners prevents accidental bumps”
  • “This glossy white ceramic washbasin is fired at more than 1280 °C (2336 °F) high temperature, making it durable, impact-resistant, and featuring a smooth, long-lasting surface that won’t fade”
  • “Features flat bottom design with 1.75” standard sized drain opening for easy installation with any standard non-overflow type drain assembly. This item includes only the ceramic basin; drain, faucet, and other accessories must be purchased separately”
  • “Packed in a 5-layer corrugated cardboard box with custom foam inserts”

Twelve hundred and eighty degrees

One of only two figures of its kind on this shelf, and it is the number that decides whether a sink stains.

Sanitary porcelain is fired around 2282 to 2372 °F (1250 to 1300 °C), at which the body partly vitrifies and its water absorption drops to a fraction of one per cent. Earthenware fired at 2012 °F (1100 °C) stays porous — and then a chip in the glaze lets water into the body, which is how an old sink develops a gray halo round a flaw.

J-FAMILY publishes “more than 1280 °C (2336 °F)”. NATURFLAIR publishes “2336 degrees Fahrenheit”, which is the same 1280.

The other six listings publish nothing. That does not make them porous — most are probably fired much the same — only that two of them let you check.

Four point four one inches, which is the real advantage

The shallowest bowl on this shelf, and it matters for a reason none of the eight listings mentions.

A vessel sink adds its height to the counter.

A standard American vanity is 32 to 34 inches. A five-inch bowl on top puts the rim at 37 to 39 inches — higher than a kitchen countertop, and high enough that washing your face means lifting your elbows.

At 4.41 inches this adds least of anything here. The NATURFLAIR is 5.9.

So if you are putting a vessel sink on a counter you are not replacing, this is the one that lands closest to right. If you are building the counter, drop it to 30 or 32 inches and any bowl here will sit well.

The flat bottom, honestly

J-FAMILY gives it as an installation advantage, and it is one: a flat-bottomed sink sits stably on a counter with less silicone holding it true.

It also lets you stand a cup, a razor or a lens case in the sink without it tipping, and it wipes out easily.

What it does less well is splashing. Water from a faucet hits a hard horizontal floor and bounces sideways and up, and a shallow puddle lingers in the corners. The two OCEALAGOON ovals on this shelf curve continuously, which deflects the flow back round the bowl and drains to the center.

On a 4.41 inch bowl with a tall vessel faucet above it, that is worth knowing: use a faucet of modest height with an aerated outlet.

And it tells you what you have to buy

This item includes only the ceramic basin; drain, faucet, and other accessories must be purchased separately.

With the specification for one of them: a 1.75 in standard drain opening for any standard non-overflow type drain assembly.

That phrase matters. A vessel sink has no overflow, so the drain must be solid, not slotted — fit a slotted one meant for a sink with an overflow and water runs out of the slots into the cabinet.

Three of the six vessel sinks here state it. This is the clearest of the three.

What this listing does not say is that there is no faucet hole either — only DeerValley on this shelf states that. The faucet goes into the counter behind the sink, or on the wall.

Five layers of board and custom foam

Four of the eight listings here lead with their packaging, and it is not filler: a ceramic bowl travels a continent on a conveyor belt.

J-FAMILY names five-layer corrugated with custom foam inserts and offers 24-hour support. NATURFLAIR goes one better and tells you to inspect the sink before installing it — which is the right advice for every sink on this shelf, because a hairline crack found after the silicone has set is a different problem.

No warranty published, which is true of all eight.

Strengths, and the catches

Strengths

  • Publishes a firing temperature above 2336 °F (1280 °C), which is the sanitary porcelain range and the figure that governs water absorption
  • The shallowest bowl on this shelf at 4.41 inches, which adds least to a counter that is already standard height
  • States plainly that the drain assembly must be a non-overflow type, and that nothing but the sink is in the box

Compromises

  • Four dollars an inch of width, the most expensive of the six vessel sinks on this shelf
  • A flat bottom holds a puddle and bounces water outward, where the ovals here curve continuously
  • No warranty published, and no mention of the missing faucet hole

The questions we get

Why does a firing temperature matter?

Because it decides how much water the ceramic body absorbs, which decides whether it stains. Sanitary porcelain — vitreous china — is fired around 2282 to 2372 °F (1250 to 1300 °C), at which point the body partly vitrifies and its water absorption falls to a fraction of a per cent; earthenware fired at 2012 °F (1100 °C) stays porous, and a chip in the glaze then lets water into the body. J-FAMILY publishes "more than 1280 °C (2336 °F)" and NATURFLAIR publishes "2336 degrees Fahrenheit", which is the same 2336 °F (1280 °C). They are the only two sinks on this shelf that publish a temperature at all. It does not make the other six porous — most are probably fired similarly — only that two of them tell you.

Is a flat bottom better or worse?

Worse for splashing, better for standing things in. A flat floor means water dropping from the faucet hits a hard horizontal surface and bounces sideways and up, and after the water drains a shallow puddle stays in the corners. The curved ovals on this shelf — both OCEALAGOON bowls — deflect the outward flow back round the bowl and drain to the center. Against that, a flat bottom lets you stand a cup, a razor or a contact lens case in the sink without it tipping over, and it is easier to wipe out. J-FAMILY gives the flat bottom as an installation advantage, which it also is: a flat-bottomed sink sits stably on a counter with less silicone.

Why does 4.41 inches of height matter so much?

Because a vessel sink adds its height to the counter, and this is the detail none of the eight listings on this shelf mentions. A standard American vanity is 32 to 34 inches high. A five-inch bowl on top of it puts the rim at 37 to 39 — above kitchen countertop height, and high enough that washing a face means raising your elbows. At 4.41 inches this adds least of any sink here, so it is the one that works best on a counter you are not replacing. If you are building the counter from scratch, drop it to 30 or 32 inches and any of these bowls will sit right.
