What the maker puts in writing
- A spacious 17.7” x 23.6” mirror capturing every detail with clarity
- “The wall-mounted cabinet ingeniously utilizes the space above the sink… With two 3-height adjustable shelves, it accommodates a wide range of bathroom products”
- “The cabinet door of this medicine cabinet can be installed for either left or right-handed opening… The precision hinges allow for fine adjustments, ensuring a seamless door closure”
- “Crafted from premium particleboard, the medicine cabinet adopts a clean white finish”
- “The wall cabinet door arrives pre-fitted with a mirror. All parts are clearly labeled. An illustrated manual and essential tools are provided. For optimal strength and security, mounting on hollow or plaster walls is discouraged”
The last sentence is the useful one
For optimal strength and security, mounting on hollow or plaster walls is discouraged.
Seven cabinets on this shelf. One of them mentions the wall.
A loaded mirror cabinet above a sink weighs fifteen kilos with its contents, and drywall anchors pull out of drywall — slowly, which is the real problem. The cabinet does not fall; it sags, and then the door will not close, and then one day it does fall.
The right answer is to screw into studs, or to fix a timber batten across two studs and hang the cabinet on that.
Every other listing here leaves that to chance. This one says it out loud, which is a reason to trust the rest of the page.
A door that opens the other way
Installed for either left or right-handed opening.
A bathroom is full of things a door can hit: a shower screen, a window reveal, the corner of the room. A single-door cabinet hinges one way or the other and there is no neutral choice.
Three cabinets on this shelf have one door. Two of them let you pick the side: this and the Kohler. YTSMIR can be flipped and reverse-mounted entirely.
And two small kindnesses
The mirror arrives already on the door. That is the assembly step people get wrong and the component they break.
Essential tools are in the box. Nobody else on this shelf includes any.
Now the material
Premium particleboard.
Of the five wood cabinets on this shelf this is the weakest product, and it fails in a particular way. Particleboard is chips bonded with resin: the faces are sealed by the white melamine, the cut edges are not, and once moisture reaches an edge the chips swell and the edge bulges for good.
Above a sink, the vulnerable edge is the underside — which is where the steam goes.
DICTAC on this shelf publishes MDF with a waterproof painting process, which is better. Kohler publishes anodized aluminum and YTSMIR metal, which do not have the problem at all.
For a sink in a ventilated bathroom, particleboard lasts years. Above a bath or near a shower, buy metal.
What is not published
No weight — on the one cabinet whose own listing worries about the wall.
No shelf load, where DICTAC publishes 22 lb (10 kg) per shelf. No formaldehyde class, where DICTAC publishes E1. No soft-close. No recessed option.
And 6.5 square inches of mirrored front per dollar, against 10.1 from the fifty-dollar VASAGLE.
