Thirty-four and a half inches
The widest cabinet on this shelf, and width is the thing most bathrooms actually need.
Above a double sink, a 24-inch cabinet looks like an afterthought; above a wide single vanity, the space either side of a narrow cabinet is dead wall. Thirty-four and a half inches fills it.
And three frameless doors across that width read as one continuous mirror with two lines in it, not three separate panels — which is what makes a small bathroom look bigger rather than busier.
Six compartments, which suits a household
Three doors, two compartments behind each.
That is three separate cabinets, and three separate cabinets is how a family divides a bathroom: one each, rather than everyone’s things on the same shelf.
Compare the DICTAC on this shelf: three shelves across a single opening, which is better for one person storing bottles of different heights.
Neither is better in the abstract. Count the people.
Recessed or surface, with one thing missing
Setting a cabinet into the wall cavity is a far better result: the mirror sits almost flush, nothing projects over the sink, and the bathroom looks built rather than furnished.
It is also real work — cutting drywall, checking for a pipe, a cable or a stud, and framing the opening.
Surface mounting is four screws into studs.
What to know here: this cabinet does both and includes no side mirror kit. A box designed to be recessed has plain sides, and surface-mounted those sides are visible at eye level.
Kohler, on this shelf, supplies a side mirror kit for exactly that reason. YTSMIR also offers both and also says nothing about the sides.
Sixteen and a half kilograms
The heaviest cabinet here, empty — 36.5 lb (16,556 g) — and loaded it will be over twenty.
“The included wall-mounting accessories help to fix the cabinet firmly to the wall” is all the listing says about the fixings.
CHOEZON on this shelf is the only maker that addresses the wall itself: mounting on hollow or plaster walls is discouraged. That applies here with more force, not less. Find the studs, or fit a batten across two of them.
And five inches, which is the limit
A tall bottle will not stand up in five inches.
The deepest cabinet on this shelf, the DICTAC, is 5.98 inches deep. At five inches, check the height of your tallest bottle before you rely on it standing upright.
No shelf load published, and no formaldehyde class.
