Ten kilograms
That number appears on one listing out of seven, and it is the one that tells you whether the cabinet works.
Bathroom shelves carry heavier things than people expect. A liter of shampoo is a kilo. A glass mouthwash bottle, a tin of talc and a row of skincare jars add up fast — and the shelf is the part that bows.
Ten kilos a shelf is a full row of bottles with margin.
Seven other listings here publish nothing. Kohler publishes tempered-glass shelves, which names the material and not the load. Five describe their shelves only as “adjustable”.
A shelf that sags inside a mirrored cabinet is a thing you then live with for a decade.
E1, which matters most in a room with no window
E1 is the European formaldehyde emission class for wood panels — the stricter end of the common classes.
The formaldehyde comes from the resin binding MDF and particleboard together, and it off-gasses hardest in the first months. A bathroom is small, warm, damp and frequently has no window, which is where that is most noticeable.
DICTAC is the only maker on this shelf that publishes a class. Five of these seven cabinets are wood products.
And the panel itself is MDF with a waterproof painting process, which is the better wood answer: denser than particleboard, and it holds paint at the cut edge, which is where particleboard swells.
Stainless hinges
Unglamorous, and the right detail.
A bathroom hinge sits in warm damp air and gets splashed. Plated steel develops rust spots at the knuckle within a few years, which stain the paint around them and eventually stiffen the door.
Six cabinets here describe their hinges — soft-close, silent-close, precision, two-way adjustable. This is the only one that says what metal they are.
Kohler avoids the question entirely by making the whole cabinet from anodized aluminum.
The one thing to dislike
A hidden groove at the lower end of each cabinet door.
No handles. You open it by hooking a finger under the bottom edge of a mirrored door.
It looks clean, and it means wet fingertips on the underside of the mirror several times a day — which is where the marks accumulate and where you cannot see them until the light catches it.
And what it does not do
Wall mount only. Kohler, YTSMIR and Tangkula all offer recessed installation, which sets the cabinet into the wall cavity and is the neatest result in a small bathroom.
Five centimeters of shelf adjustment, where CHOEZON gives three discrete positions per shelf.
And nothing about the wall it hangs on, which only CHOEZON addresses on this shelf.
