What the maker puts in writing
- “Measuring 7.7”D x 8.4”W x 70.9”H, this slim freestanding cabinet occupies a small footprint yet offers ample vertical storage”
- “This tall storage cabinet has a total of 4 adjustable shelves behind the doors and in the open compartments. Each has 5 height options”
- “Mount the doors on the upper or lower section, with left or right installation to suit your room layout”
- “Secure the storage unit to the wall with the included anti-tip kit”
- “Constructed from sturdy MDF panels… Its smooth surface makes cleaning a breeze”
Doors on the top half or the bottom
That is the sentence that distinguishes this cabinet, and every other listing on this shelf decides it for you.
Doors on top puts the medicine and the spare toiletries behind a door at eye level, and leaves open shelves low down for towels you take on the way past.
Doors on the bottom hides what should not be seen near the floor — the cleaning things, the toilet brush, the packets — and puts open shelves at eye level, where a decanted bottle and a folded flannel look like a decision rather than a pile.
Then the doors can also be hung to open left or right.
Four configurations from one carton. Nothing else here offers more than two.
Twenty shelf positions
Four adjustable shelves, five heights each.
Which matters in a cabinet eight inches wide, because almost nothing fits a fixed spacing. A shampoo bottle is seven or eight inches. A folded hand towel is two. A box of plasters is one. A liter of bleach is eleven.
Fixed shelves give you three gaps that are all slightly wrong. This lets you set them once you know what is going in.
On this shelf: the UBBC566 pair have two adjustable shelves, the SoBuy has removable baffles, and the Haotian and the UBBK760 publish no adjustment at all.
Seven point seven inches
The slimmest cabinet here by depth, and the second narrowest overall — about 64.7 square inches of floor against 62.4 for the SoBuy and 194.7 for the widest VASAGLE.
Which is the whole point of this product category: it goes in the gap behind the door, or in the dead strip beside the toilet, or in the 7.87 in (200 mm) between the sink and the wall.
And at 9.7 kilograms one person carries it up a flight of stairs in one trip.
Which is also the reservation
Nine thousand seven hundred grams for a seventy-one-inch cabinet is the lightest on this shelf. The SoBuy, at 70.8 inches, is 26.5 lb (12,000 g). The Haotian, at a shorter 66.9 inches, is 15,014.
On MDF furniture, mass is panel thickness — and panel thickness is what stops a shelf bowing under a row of bottles, and what holds a screw in a cam joint when the cabinet is moved.
In fairness, this is also much the slimmest unit here, so there is less of it to weigh. But the SoBuy publishes a 99 lb load capacity and this publishes none.
If the shelves are going to carry bottles rather than cotton wool, that is the comparison to make.
The anti-tip kit, which every cabinet here includes
Seventy-one inches tall on a seven-and-a-half-inch footprint is a nine-to-one ratio.
A child pulling a door, a towel catching, a knock while vacuuming — and it goes over. Every maker on this shelf supplies the bracket, because every maker knows.
Screw it to the wall.
What this one does not have
No light, where two cabinets on this shelf have one.
No ventilation. Solid doors, in a room full of steam, with towels inside. The Haotian here has louvred doors for exactly that reason, and costs $8 less.
No formaldehyde class, no glass shelf, no load figure.
