PROFLO PF5414 wall-mount china sink review

A 19-5/8 in vitreous china wall-mount sink with three 4-inch-center faucet holes, an overflow and a rear drain.

What the maker puts in writing

  • Constructed of vitreous china
  • Wall Mounted installation
  • “Sink comes pre-drilled with 3 faucet holes for faucets with 4” faucet centers”
  • “Rear drain location increases available space under the sink”
  • “Equipped with an overflow to prevent water overflow and spillage”

Five bullets, none longer than a line. And three of them are the three things that matter.

Nineteen and five-eighths inches

The only full-sized sink on this shelf.

The others are 11.8, 12, 14.37, 14.4, 14.6 and 16.1 inches wide — powder room and hand sink sizes, where your hands fit and little else.

Nearly twenty inches is a proper bathroom sink: wash a face without touching the sides, rinse a collar, fill a jug.

And the weight says the same. 28.0 lb (12,719 g) — 649 grams per inch of width, against 435 for the CHIKESI, 382 for the XIFIRY and 42 for the plastic shawoo sinks.

That is real vitreous china, and it is the third cheapest ceramic here per inch, after the DeerValley and the CHIKESI, at $3.56.

The rear drain, which nothing else here mentions

Rear drain location increases available space under the sink.

This is the only listing on this shelf that thinks about what is underneath, and on a wall-mount sink there is nowhere to hide it.

No cabinet. The trap and the supply pipes are on display, at eye level when you are sitting down.

A drain in the middle of the bowl puts the trap in the middle of that open space, projecting into the room. A rear drain puts it back against the wall, where the pipework tucks in and a bottle trap looks like a decision.

PROFLO gives the consequence in its own words: more space under the sink. Which means knee room — and in an accessible bathroom, room for a wheelchair.

Three holes, and the faucet decision that follows

Pre-drilled for 4 inch centers, which means a centerset faucet: spout and both handles on one base plate spanning four inches.

That is the common American arrangement with plenty of choice. What it rules out:

A single-hole faucet — which is what every other sink on this shelf is drilled for. Fit one here and two holes are left open, unless you buy a deck plate to cover them.

An 8 inch widespread set — too wide to reach.

The holes are in fired china. They cannot be moved.

The compensation is real, though: three holes is what you need if you want separate hot and cold faucets, which a single-hole sink cannot give you at all.

And an overflow

One of only two sinks on this shelf with one — the other is the CHIKESI.

An overflow is the hole near the rim that takes the water when a faucet is left running with the plug in. It also dictates the drain you buy: a sink with an overflow needs a slotted pop-up drain so the channel can drain.

PROFLO publishes the overflow and not the drain opening size, so ask before ordering the drain. CHIKESI publishes both, and states that its 1.75 inch opening suits US pop-up drains with overflow.

The thing the listing does not discuss

How twelve and a half kilograms gets onto a wall.

Dry it is 28.0 lb (12,719 g). Full of water and with somebody leaning on it, considerably more — and all of that load goes into two bolts and the rim.

That needs timber blocking between studs, or a proprietary wall-hung frame. Drywall anchors will not do it, and a wall-mount sink that works loose is a cracked sink and a wet floor.

No listing on this shelf addresses it, and on the heaviest sink here it matters most.

And three figures that are absent

No interior bowl dimensions, where CHIKESI and MEJE publish theirs — and the gap between exterior and interior can be five inches of rim.

No drain opening size. No warranty, where XIFIRY publishes twelve months.

And no projection figure — how far it comes off the wall — on the largest sink here, which is the one where that matters most. The catalog reads 13.4 in (340 mm), which would be 13.4 inches: nearly twice the shallowest sink on this shelf. Measure the room.

Strengths, and the catches

Strengths

  • Nineteen and five-eighths inches: the only sink on this shelf big enough to wash in rather than merely rinse hands
  • A rear drain, which is the only listing here that thinks about the plumbing a wall-mount sink leaves on display
  • Three holes at 4 inch centers plus an overflow, in vitreous china weighing nearly thirteen kilograms

Compromises

  • Three holes on 4 inch centers rules out the single-hole faucet that every other sink on this shelf expects
  • Five one-line bullets: no interior dimensions, no drain opening size, no warranty, no projection figure
  • Twelve point seven kilograms on a wall needs proper blocking or a frame, which the listing does not discuss

The questions we get

Why is the rear drain worth noticing?

Because a wall-mount sink has nowhere to hide its plumbing. There is no cabinet: the trap and the supply pipes are on show under the bowl, at eye level when you are sitting down. A drain in the middle of the sink puts the trap in the middle of that open space, projecting into the room. A rear drain puts it against the wall, where the pipework can be tucked back and a bottle trap looks deliberate rather than accidental. PROFLO states the practical consequence itself — "increases available space under the sink" — which on a wall-mount sink means knee room and, in an accessible bathroom, room for a wheelchair. It is the only listing on this shelf to mention what is underneath at all.

What does three holes at 4 inch centers commit me to?

A centerset faucet: a single unit with the spout and both handles on one base plate spanning four inches between the outer holes. That is the common American arrangement and there is plenty of choice. What it rules out is a single-hole faucet, which is what every other sink on this shelf is drilled for — fit one here and two holes are left open unless you buy a deck plate — and an 8 inch widespread set, which will not reach. The drilling is in fired china and cannot be changed. Decide the faucet first. It is also worth noting that a three-hole sink is what you want if you prefer separate hot and cold, which a single-hole sink cannot give you.

Is it big enough to be a proper sink?

It is the only one on this shelf that is. Nineteen and five-eighths inches is a standard bathroom sink width — the others here are 11.8 to 16.1 inches, which are powder room and hand sink sizes. At nearly twenty inches you can wash a face without touching the sides, rinse a shirt collar, or fill a jug. The weight says the same thing: 28.0 lb (12,719 g), which is 649 grams per inch of width, against 382 for the lightest ceramic sink here and 42 for the plastic ones. That is real vitreous china. It also means the wall must be able to take it: twelve and a half kilograms dry, more with water and somebody leaning on it, needs blocking between studs or a proprietary frame — not drywall anchors.
