What the maker puts in writing
- Standard 11-1/2 in rough-in and 3/4” top spud; exposed sweat solder kit; polished chrome-plated finish cast wall flange
- 1.0 gpf urinal flush volume
- “Clog-resistant triple filter diaphragm; Chemical resistant gaskets and seals for extended service life with lower maintenance costs; Manual ADA compliant handle with no-leak seal technology; 3-year limited warranty”
- From the description: “a quiet GO BLUE dual-seal diaphragm with a clog-resistant bypass and chloramine-resistant seals for an extended lifespan and lower maintenance costs… a water-saving solution for any commercial retrofit or new construction project”
First: this is not a household part
A flushometer is the exposed chrome valve on a pipe above a commercial urinal or toilet. There is no tank. It takes water straight from the main water supply and meters out one measured flush, which is why a commercial washroom can be used continuously with no refill wait.
It needs a large supply and real flow — more than a house normally has.
And this one is for a urinal: 3/4 inch spud, 11-1/2 inch rough-in, 1.0 gallon per flush.
Two products on this shelf are commercial, this and the Sloan rebuild kit. The other eight go inside a toilet tank. They are not alternatives to each other.
The sweat solder kit, and what it commits you to
Exposed sweat solder kit.
“Sweating” a joint means heating copper pipe and fitting until solder is drawn into the gap. It needs a torch, flux, solder, a dry pipe and the building’s water off.
So this valve is plumbed into copper, not screwed onto a flexible connector — normal for a flushometer, and completely unlike every tank part on this shelf, all of which drop in or screw on.
If soldering water pipe with the supply isolated is not something you do, this is a trade installation and should be priced as one.
Chloramine, named
This is the best specification on this shelf and the only place the word appears.
Most American municipal systems now treat with chloramine rather than free chlorine, and chloramine is harder on rubber. A diaphragm sits in that water permanently, and chemical attack is why flushometers eventually weep or fail to close.
Four listings here claim chemical resistance of some kind — Korky’s chlorine-resistant rubber, Fluidmaster’s silicone, Danco’s chemical-resistant silicone. Zurn names the actual chemical.
Worth reading against the Sloan kit on this shelf, whose diaphragm is described as proprietary natural rubber with no resistance claim attached.
On a valve flushed hundreds of times a day, where a service call costs more than the valve, that is the sentence that pays for itself.
And the triple filter, which prevents the two real failures
A flushometer times its flush by letting a trickle of water through a bypass orifice, and that orifice is very small.
A grain of grit or a flake of scale blocks it, and then one of two things happens: the valve will not close, and runs continuously on water pressure, or it will not open properly, and there is no flush.
A triple filter catches debris before it reaches the bypass, and Zurn describes the bypass as clog-resistant as well.
This is why a $119 commercial valve is not comparable to a $12 flapper. A flapper fails politely — a slow leak into the pan. A flushometer stuck open on water pressure does not.
One point nought gallons, and an ADA handle
1.0 GPF on a urinal is a water-saving specification; older valves were 1.5 or more, and Zurn positions this for retrofit.
ADA compliant handle matters in a commercial building: the handle must be operable without tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist, and that is a code requirement rather than a courtesy. Zurn adds no-leak seal technology at the handle, which is the other place a flushometer weeps.
And a three-year warranty
Which makes Zurn and Fluidmaster the only two makers on this shelf that publish a warranty at all.
Two point seven kilograms of cast and chrome-plated metal, against 91 grams for a flapper. It is a different class of object for a different job, and the only mistake you can make with it is buying it for a house.
